Siemens' Mitras facility in Mexico becomes the first factory globally to achieve LEED Platinum certification, setting new standards for sustainability

Siemens has secured platinum LEED certification for its Mitras manufacturing facility in Mexico, marking a significant milestone in sustainable industrial design

The 18,700-square-metre complex has become the first Siemens factory globally to achieve LEED Platinum status, and the first industrial building in Mexico to earn LEED Platinum for Building Design and Construction: New Construction under LEED v4.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system is the world's most widely adopted green building certification framework, applied across more than 180 countries.

The system evaluates projects against criteria including energy efficiency, water management and overall financial performance. Platinum certification is awarded only to projects demonstrating exceptional performance across these metrics.

Judith Wiese, Chief People and Sustainability Officer of Siemens, says: "For more than 130 years, Siemens has been part of Mexico's growth. Today, the country remains a strategic hub with highly skilled people enabling us to advance our own sustainability commitment while delivering innovation at scale for our customers."

Advanced manufacturing operations

The Mitras facility houses some of Siemens' most advanced manufacturing operations in northern Mexico.

The plant conducts plastic injection moulding and manufactures low-voltage electrical components used in circuit protection and electrical technologies for building more resilient infrastructure.

According to Siemens, this LEED certification indicates how sustainability and industrial competitiveness can advance together, with the company suggesting that responsible operations are shaping the future of work across multiple industries. This achievement builds on previous recognition Siemens has received for its manufacturing presence in Mexico.

In November 2025, the company secured Made in Mexico certification from the Ministry of Economy, highlighting the quality, innovation and national technological value of products manufactured in the country.

The company joined more than 600 organisations holding this certification, demonstrating commitment to Mexico's industrial development.

Prioritising workforce wellbeing

The Mitras manufacturing facility, announced in 2022 and inaugurated in 2024, was developed to strengthen and expand Siemens' production capabilities in northern Mexico. Located in Nuevo León, the plant combines sustainable practice with working conditions designed to enhance employee wellbeing and comfort.

The facility prioritises high air quality, enhanced comfort levels and abundant natural daylight for workers, while operating on 100% renewable energy.

Factory workstations feature adjustable designs to optimise worker comfort, and digital capabilities improve workplace safety to reduce physical stress on employees.

The plant integrates a range of digitalisation and sustainable infrastructure technologies developed by Siemens, including digital monitoring platforms and energy management solutions. These systems help to optimise production processes and improve operational transparency across the manufacturing floor.

According to Siemens, the site has achieved an approximately 40% reduction in power consumption compared to reference industrial buildings, while generating approximately 800 MWh of renewable energy annually through on-site solar production.

Judith describes the factory's success as offering "a blueprint for the future of sustainable manufacturing", combining high sustainability standards with employee wellbeing prioritisation.

Recognition for Mexican manufacturing

Alejandro Preinfalk, President and CEO of Siemens Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, says of the recognition: "This recognition is a testament to what we achieve when we combine talent, technology and vision.

"Currently, our six manufacturing sites integrate advanced technology and sustainable practices, transferring knowledge and adding national value to global chains. We want Mexican manufacturing to continue to be synonymous with innovation and sustainability."

The Mitras factory represents a model for manufacturers seeking to balance operational efficiency with environmental responsibility and workforce considerations in their facility design and operations. The facility demonstrates how modern manufacturing can prioritise both productivity and sustainability.

The achievement reflects Siemens' broader commitment to sustainable industrial practices and positions the Mitras facility as a benchmark for future manufacturing developments.
