MHP, Amazon Web Services and partners develop DIN SAE SPEC 91487, setting a new global standard for digital twins of electric vehicle batteries

The telecommunications industry increasingly benefits from advancements in digital twin technology.

The launch of the new DIN SPEC standard for digital twins of electric vehicle (EV) batteries highlights the sector’s drive toward interoperability and innovation.

MHP, a management and IT consultancy, together with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and another partner, has developed the DIN SAE SPEC 91487:2025-08, defining uniform terms and characteristics for digital twins of EV batteries.

The new specification, developed over two and a half years through a collaborative working group led by MHP, aims to standardise terminology and attributes for digital twin models

He notes that the framework facilitates international communication and collaboration among IoT providers, cloud service companies and research institutions, establishing a foundation for future innovations.

"With the appropriate competence and expertise, projects of this size can now also be successfully implemented.” 

The initiative is not prescriptive about industry-specific or algorithmic requirements, focusing instead on providing a clear, common framework that supports broad usability and adaptability.

AWS level 4 digital twin model

Critical to the new DIN SPEC is AWS’ provision of a preformulated Level 4 digital twin model.

The model enables real-time monitoring and advanced analysis of EV batteries using live vehicle data, fleet insights and AI algorithms.

By leveraging the maturity model, the standard supports battery lifecycle management, predictive maintenance and enhanced operational decision-making.
