Here's what the acquisition means for the global manufacturing and automation leader and for a sector where industrial robots continue grow in prominence

Rockwell Automation, the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and digital transformation, has announced the completion of its acquisition of Clearpath Robotics Inc.

Based in Ontario, Canada, Clearpath Robotics is a leading innovator in autonomous robotics, particularly autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) used in industrial applications.

This acquisition strengthens Rockwell’s position in the growing field of autonomous technology, enhancing its portfolio in both industrial and research sectors.

Blake Moret, Chairman and CEO of Rockwell Automation

“We are delighted to welcome the Clearpath Robotics and OTTO Motors teams to Rockwell,” said Blake Moret, Chairman and CEO, Rockwell Automation.

“This acquisition marks a turning point for our customers around the world. Rockwell is simplifying and transforming the difficult yet critical function of material handling throughout the manufacturing plant with an end-to-end production logistics solution. Production logistics is key to optimizing operations across an entire facility and bringing the Connected Enterprise to life.”

Boosting innovation in industrial automation

The acquisition includes Clearpath Robotics' research division, which is renowned for developing cutting-edge autonomous technologies, as well as OTTO Motors, its industrial division.

OTTO Motors is known for its AMRs, which are revolutionising industrial automation.

These robots are transforming operations by improving productivity and safety, making them a crucial part of the future of manufacturing.

Both the research and industrial divisions will report to Rockwell’s Intelligent Devices operating segment, positioning the company to lead the development of AMRs in various industries.

Amar Mehta, EY Americas Strategy and Transactions Advanced Manufacturing Leader

“Not only do AMRs connect islands of automation; they are often one of the final major elements that help manufacturers achieve autonomous production logistics, enabling significant value creation for the manufacturer and their customers,” says Amar Mehta, EY Americas Strategy and Transactions Advanced Manufacturing Leader.

“Rockwell is a leader in the key hardware, software and services that are needed to integrate AMRs into a manufacturing plant.

"With this acquisition, Rockwell enhances its ability to take manufacturers on a full end-to-end digital transformation for their production environments."

Showcasing solutions at Rockwell's Automation Fair

At Rockwell's upcoming Automation Fair, held in Boston from November 6-9, OTTO Motors will be showcased, providing an opportunity for customers to experience firsthand the impact that AMRs can have on operations.

The event will highlight how these advanced robots can enhance both operational efficiency and safety in industrial settings, helping businesses stay competitive in an increasingly automated world.

According to a report by Interact Analysis, the market for AMRs in manufacturing is expected to experience significant growth, with projections indicating a 30% annual growth rate over the next five years.
