Northvolt lays out plans to expand its operations in Poland, developing Europe’s largest factory for energy storage solutions...

With a vision to enable the future of energy, Northvolt furthers its ambitions with its latest expansion plans for Poland.

Northvolt: Gdańsk, Poland

Starting production in 2022, Northvolt’s US$200mn expansion plan will increase its battery systems capabilities in Gdańsk, Poland. The factory is expected to have an initial annual output of 5 GWh, with a potential future capacity of 12 GWh.

“Securing battery cell manufacturing capacity in Europe is key for its industrial future, but what is equally critical is the industrial capacity for integrating cells into real-world solutions. It is this that the new factory will deliver – sophisticated, sustainable energy storage systems to support the transformation of Europe’s electricity grid and its industry,”  said Peter Carlsson, Co-Founder and CEO, Northvolt.

Northvolt’s investment will facilitate a ramp-up in manufacturing capacity of battery modules and systems to provide its clients with long-term, high-volume supply agreements for complete battery system solutions.

In addition, Northvolt will be providing technical solutions to end industrial dependence on fossil fuels, and unlock the use of renewable energy.

Development has already begun on the new factory, with expectation that the first phase of construction will start in autumn 2021, with production starting in 2022.

The initial phase of the project aims to establish an annual output of 5 GWh of modules and packs. The second phase will expand the factory’s capacity to 12 GWh. In addition a new engineering research and development (R&D) center of excellence in conjunction with the expansion, creating 500 new jobs.

“Northvolt has been present in Poland for three years and we are impressed by both the professionalism and caliber of the engineers and manufacturing staff we’re engaged with in our activities here. We are excited about going out and recruiting 500 more,” said Emad Zand, President Battery Systems, Northvolt.
