Pirelli and Swedish 3D computer vision and machine learning company, Univrses, have signed an agreement for the integration of AI-based computer vision technologies into Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre System

Pirelli says its Cyber Tyre is a hardware and software system capable of collecting data from sensors inside tyres, processing them through Pirelli’s proprietary software and algorithms and communicating in real time with the vehicle’s electronics.

This comes as Pirelli has announced that the company will start production of its Cyber Tyre in Georgia, US, after a dispute involving the Italian government and Pirelli’s Chinese investor Sinochem.

The agreement with Univrses

Pirelli says the agreement with Univrses will strengthen solutions for road network monitoring as well as for autonomous driving, as Univrses’ 3DAI technologies are integrated into Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre system solutions.

Univrses' 3DAI system digitises city and roadside infrastructure transforming roads and road assets into actionable real-time data. Pirelli say that the combination of both companies technologies has potential in autonomous driving systems.

Pirelli CEO, Andrea Casaluci, says: “The agreement with Univrses further enhances our Cyber Tyre platform, thanks to advanced AI‑based artificial vision technologies.

“The collaboration between Pirelli and Univrses will make a significant contribution to the ongoing transformation of cars into true software‑defined vehicles.”

Under the agreement, Pirelli is set to acquire a 30% stake in Univrses, with the option to reach a majority stake.

Advanced manufacturing in Georgia

Pirelli's Rome, Georgia, plant creates advanced tyre products for the high-value segment and motorsport. Pirelli has chosen the manufacturing site to start Cyber Tyre production in the US.

Pirelli is finalising the introduction of the latest version of the Modular Integrated Robotized System production process to be used in the manufacturing process at the site.

In a press release, Pirelli says that the process will be the most advanced manufacturing process for high-end, premium production within the entire Pirelli Group.

Claudio Zanardo, CEO of Pirelli North America, says: “The start of Cyber Tyre production in our Rome, Georgia plant is a significant milestone for Pirelli in this country.

“It reflects our commitment to bringing advanced technologies like Cyber Tyre closer to the market, further strengthening our industrial footprint and innovation capabilities in the United States.”

Pirelli’s governance dispute and US manufacturing

Pirelli says that exact investment and output expansion details in Georgia will be communicated in the coming months following the finalisation of the development plans.

Reuters reported that a governance dispute related to fears Pirelli could fall foul of US rules restricting the use of Chinese technology in the autos sector emerged before the decision to manufacture in the US.

Reuters adds that Pirelli moved production to the US after Italy curbed the influence of Pirelli’s Chinese investor Sinochem, who own a 34.1% stake in Pirelli, in an attempt to help the tyre manufacturer's expansion into the US.

The first project between Pirelli and Univrses

In a press release, Pirelli says that a first project in collaboration with Univrses is already underway in Italy.

In 2025, Pirelli and the Puglia Region launched a monitoring system for the regional road network to create an up-to-date map of infrastructure conditions.

The system provides analyses based on data collected by tyres and processed through the Cyber Tyre platform, together with visual data collected through cameras and interpreted using Univrses technology.

Univrses technology

Over the past seven years, Univrses has worked with leading vehicle manufacturers to develop advanced driver assistance functionality. Its software is already integrated into flagship models from several global brands.

Univrses has previously collaborated with Volvo Group and Mercedes-Benz.

Univrses CEO, Jonathan Selbie, says: “Continuous monitoring and data are becoming the new foundation for infrastructure asset management and Univrses technology is able to provide powerful analytical capabilities based on reliable and frequently updated data.

“In this context, we are pleased to welcome Pirelli as an investor and to take our partnership to the next level: we will join forces to deliver increasingly advanced services and products.”

Univrses now supports authorities across Europe, including Sweden’s Trafikverket and National Highways in the UK.
