Following the restart of its UK expansions and investments, AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot says there is “strong growth” in the company’s Q1 2026 earnings

AstraZeneca has announced an investment of £300m ($408m) in UK pharmaceutical manufacturing investments after pausing projects in 2025.

The company halted expansion plans last year due to market uncertainty around drug pricing and NHS medicine availability.

On 29 April, it said it plans to invest into two existing locations: Cambridge – where it paused a £200m (US$272m) expansion – and Macclesfield – where it plans to invest an additional £100m (US$136m).

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the commitment will "future proof thousands of jobs". He attributed the restart to a "pharmaceutical arrangement we have struck with the United States" during Prime Minister's Questions on 29 April.

Manufacturing facility expansion plans

Chief Executive Pascal Soriot says AstraZeneca plans to construct a "lab of the future" at the Macclesfield site. The facility will use digital and data tools to speed drug development.

He said: "We would like to thank the British government for their efforts to improve access for patients, including four new approvals since the beginning of the year across the UK.

"We look forward to further enhancing the access and the reimbursement environment and build a strong life sciences sector."

The company had previously stopped development of its Cambridge investment in September 2025. That decision followed the abandonment of a £450m ($612m) vaccine manufacturing facility at Speke, Merseyside.

Government negotiations influence investment decisions

According to AstraZeneca, cuts in government spending prompted the pause. This occurred after months of negotiations between the company and officials.

The new investments will create scientific positions in Macclesfield. Data analysis and molecular science staff will transfer to the Rosalind Franklin office in Cambridge.

Susannah Streeter, Chief Investment Strategist at Wealth Club, says: "This is super encouraging and it does seem as though there is a sense of momentum returning to the pharmaceutical industry in the UK."

Susannah describes the Cambridge expansion restart as "highly symbolic". She adds it "demonstrates how the government has been working hard behind the scenes to try and make the UK more attractive to big pharma".

First quarter performance exceeds targets

AstraZeneca released its Q1 2026 earnings on 29 April. According to the company, revenues increased 8% to $15.3bn. Operating profit rose to 12%.

Oncology treatments grew 16% while rare disease treatments increased 15%. These figures could indicate demand patterns across both therapeutic areas.

Pascal says: "We delivered strong growth in Q1 2026, with total revenue above US$15bn, demonstrating our consistent commercial execution.

"We are advancing through our catalyst‑rich period, with positive readouts for four high-value Phase III programmes since our last quarterly results, including first pivotal data for two key new molecular entities (NMEs)."

Production targets through 2030

According to AstraZeneca, cancer drugs now represent nearly half of total sales. The company stated some individual drugs could generate more than US$1bn in annual revenue by 2030.

AstraZeneca aims to reach US$80bn in total sales by 2030. Pascal addresses future plans during the Q1 earnings call.

He says: "With a broad portfolio, a deep pipeline and meaningful advances across multiple transformative technologies, we are well-positioned to extend growth beyond 2030."

The manufacturing investments could support production capacity for these projected sales volumes. The timeline for completing both facility expansions remains unconfirmed.
