Toyota has confirmed its plans to build a new SUV production facility in Maharashtra, India with plans to start production in 2029

Toyota Motor has announced plans to build a new Toyota Kirloskar Motor plant in the Bidkin industrial area of Maharashtra, India. 

The new plant is planned to start production in the first half of 2029 and is aimed to strengthen Toyota's business foundation in the Indian market.

India has now surpassed Japan to become the third largest automobile market globally, according to the Indian Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.

Toyota’s new manufacturing facility

Toyota has confirmed that the manufacturing plant will be in the Bidkin industrial area in Maharashtra, India. 

According to India’s National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation, the area targets sectors like EVs, automotive, aerospace and electronics. The area has drawn investment from companies such as JSW Green Mobility, Lubrizol and Ather Energy.

Toyota has confirmed the planned start of production in the first half of 2029 with a production capacity of 100,000 vehicles per year. Toyota says the plant will require roughly 2,800 employees. 

In manufacturing, main processes including stamping, welding, painting, assembly production will be implemented at the site to produce a “new SUV”, according to a press release issued by Toyota. 

Nikkei Asia reported that total investment is estimated at around JP„300bn (US$1.9bn) and expected the plant to triple Toyota's production capacity in the country to a million units by the 2030s.

Toyota in India

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, a Toyota led joint venture with the Indian conglomerate Kirloskar Group for the manufacturing of Toyota vehicles in the region, recorded its strongest year of sales in 2025. 

Total sales reached 3,88,801 units in 2025, a growth of 19% compared to the 3,26,329 units sold in 2024.

Toyota already manufactures some vehicles at sites in India, with its Bidadi plants producing models like the Corolla and Camry for regional distribution. 

Additionally, Suzuki Motor manufactures a BEV for Toyota at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India.

In a press release detailing the new manufacturing facility, Toyota says that it will continue strengthening its production structure to enable flexible response to future demand growth and market changes in India and the surrounding regions.

A report from Nikkei adds that the new plants in Maharashtra will also serve as export hubs, supplying vehicles to both the Indian market and those in the Middle East and Africa.

Toyota in Africa and the Middle East

Toyota’s sales revenues in Central and South America, Oceania, Africa and the Middle East increased by JP„237.7bn (US$1.5bn), or 5.3%, to JP„4,758.9bn (US$30bn) in the financial year 2025/26  compared with financial year 2024/25.

Operating income increased by JP„76.3bn (US$483m), or 30.2%, to JP„328.9bn (US$2bn).

Toyota attributed the increase in operating income as mainly due to marketing efforts. This marked a second year of strong sales in the regions; the company also reported growth in its financial year 2025 for the region with operating income increasing 27.4% over financial year 2024.
