BMW Group has selected GXO Logistics to run its warehouse at its MINI factory in Swindon
GXO Logistics secures a strategic partnership with BMW Group to manage warehouse operations at its historic Swindon manufacturing plant

GXO Logistics, a global pure-play contract logistics provider, has been selected by the BMW Group to manage operations at its historic Swindon manufacturing facility.

The partnership places GXO at the helm of warehouse operations for car parts, with a mission to optimise the BMW Group’s supply chain and bolster automotive production resilience within the United Kingdom.

The Swindon site, which has been a cornerstone of British manufacturing since 1955, is a critical component of the global production network. It produces pressed parts for MINI vehicles assembled in Oxford, alongside components for BMW models manufactured at international facilities.

The site currently employs over 500 people and covers 425,000 square metres in the Stratton St Margaret area.

Driving efficiencies through smart logistics solutions

Drawing on a broad portfolio of experience across multiple industrial sectors, GXO intends to implement smarter processes and upgraded technology to support BMW Group's requirements for innovation.

Martin Cooper, Managing Director, Technology and Consumer Goods at GXO UK&I, said: โ€œWeโ€™re excited to begin this new chapter with BMW Group at their facility in Swindon. Weโ€™ve seen great success applying smart logistics solutions across a range of industries and we look forward to driving efficiencies, strengthening resilience and building a future-proof platform for growth for BMW Group.โ€

The logistics provider will focus on plant layout optimisation and the introduction of advanced automation to meet the increasingly complex production demands of the Oxford assembly plant.

Swindon's role in global vehicle production

The Swindon plant is a vital hub for manufacturing key body components and sub-assemblies. This includes 'hang-on parts' such as doors, tailgates, fenders and bonnets for several MINI models, including the MINI convertible and the MINI Cooper 3- and 5-door hatch. Recent investments have already enhanced the site’s technical capabilities.

  • 1955: Site founded by Pressed Steel as an extension to the Oxford plant.
  • 2022: Opening of a new press shop and logistics hall featuring an automated steel pressing facility.
  • 2024: GXO completes a £762m takeover of the Chippenham-based Wincanton group.
  • 2026: GXO officially selected to lead Swindon warehouse operations.

Expertise in advanced automotive automation

The partnership is a milestone in GXO’s ongoing expansion within the UK automotive sector. By using data-driven logistics and continuous improvement methodologies, GXO aims to ensure the Swindon site remains agile in the face of evolving manufacturing needs.

The integration of advanced automation is designed to streamline the flow of parts and panels made for cars destined for the BMW Group’s global network.

This move aligns with the company's broader growth strategy in the region, including its Wincanton acquisition. Malcolm Wilson, former CEO of GXO, previously outlined the strategic intent behind the firm's recent acquisitions and service expansions:

“The combination of GXO and Wincanton will enhance GXO’s offering for customers across the UK and Ireland and bring presence in strategic verticals that will serve as a springboard for growth."

Managing complex sub-assembly and logistics halls

The Swindon facility is a key part of the global BMW Group network, specifically regarding the high-precision requirements of sub-assembly.

The 2022 expansion into new logistics halls provided the necessary physical infrastructure for the latest press-shop technology.

GXO’s role in managing these assets involves supervising the warehouse operations that feed these automated facilities. By future-proofing the platform for growth, the partnership seeks to ensure that components like fenders and tailgates move through the 4site with maximum efficiency.

This oversight is expected to strengthen the link between the Swindon pressings and the final assembly lines in Oxford, maintaining the resilience of the automotive production cycle.
