With its recent acquisition of vertical pump motor manufacturer Aurora Motors, ABB continues to manufacture the future of the sustainable electric motor

ABB recently announced its acquisition of Aurora Motors, purchasing the US$4m American Vertical Pump Motors provider.

With engineering and operations spanning Shanghai to California, ABB will gain a well-regarded product portfolio and a longstanding customer base across 30 countries.

This transaction is part of the Motion Business area’s profitable growth strategy, enabling the NEMA Motors Division to enhance its product offering, support its global consumer base and expand its supply chain.

Conroy Shum, President of Aurora Motors

"Combining Aurora's extensive experience and expertise in the vertical pump motor sector with ABB's top-tier operations and commitment to excellence in the industry is genuinely thrilling!” says Conroy Shum, President of Aurora Motors.

Jesse Henson, President of ABB’s NEMA Division agrees, calling the acquisition a major strategic move.

ABB has made extensive moves in 2024 to secure a more sustainable future for the electric motor.

Earlier this summer Manufacturing Digital travelled to Finland for a tour of the factory where ABB's MV Titanium is being produced.

With built-in monitoring and analytics functions, the motor can reduce energy consumption by up to 40% and is designed for use across a diversity of industries.

In addition to this, ABB has also developed their Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium motors, notable for their exceptional energy efficiency.

These motors were recently awarded the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award.

ABB showcased these motors and its other high-performance solutions like the The new ABB NEMA Motors DP200 Crush+ at the 2024 EASA Convention, making its dedication to driving motor durability, efficiency and sustainability clear.

This dedication has also been reflected in ABB's new brand positioning statement, where everything the company does is 'Engineered To Outrun'.

This means helping industries run cleaner and leader, becoming more sustainable, efficient and productive so they can outperform industry standards.

Brandon Spencer, the President of ABB Motion

"As the world leader in electric motors and drives, we keep industries running and help them improve their performance while saving energy," says Brandon Spencer, the President of ABB Motion on LinkedIn.

"Simply upgrading an electric motor with one of our drives can reduce its power consumption by as much as 25% .

"When you consider that 45% of the world’s electricity is converted by electric motors into motion and less than 25% of these motors motors are equipped with drives, the potential energy savings are enormous."

ABB's success has been rooted in both manufacturing innovation and influential partnerships.

These include the company's collaboration with NASCAR, driving sustainable motor innovation across motorsport and electric mobility and of course it's acquisition of Aurora Motors.

Through all of these things, ABB continues to position itself as a global leader in electrification and automation.
