Why Philips Leads in Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation

Philips continues to lead the charge in sustainable manufacturing within the health technology sector, as evidenced by its 2024 annual report.
The company's commitment to sustainability and ESG principles is deeply embedded in its manufacturing processes and product development.
Philips is a leading healthcare technology company that focuses on sustainable manufacturing practices in the production of medical devices and consumer health products. It prioritises circular economy principles, with 18% of its 2022 revenues coming from circular products and services.
Philips is transitioning to service-based models, selling product usage rather than ownership to maximise resource effectiveness and drive innovation in sustainable healthcare solutions.
Manufacturing and the circular economy
- Circular revenues now account for 24% of total sales
- Products are designed for reuse, refurbishment and recycling, reducing electronic waste
Philips has made significant strides in reducing emissions across its manufacturing operations. A partnership with Portugal's Champalimaud Foundation achieved a 24% emissions reduction in diagnostic and interventional imaging equipment production within one year, cutting 40 tonnes of CO₂e.
It aims to halve the carbon footprint of its diagnostic operations by 2028.
Sustainable healthcare technology manufacturing
Philips' manufacturing innovations prioritise sustainability, with groundbreaking advancements in medical technology.
The next-generation BlueSeal helium-free MRI system eliminates reliance on scarce helium resources, making imaging more sustainable without compromising quality. The innovation has seen widespread adoption, with more than 1,500 BlueSeal systems now operational worldwide.
Additionally, the AI-enabled SmartSpeed MRI platform enhances efficiency by delivering scans up to three times faster while significantly reducing energy consumption in production and operation, further reinforcing Philips' commitment to environmentally responsible healthcare solutions.
Responsible supply chain
Philips has been recognised for its responsible manufacturing and supply chain initiatives.
"Our supplier sustainability approach reflects our commitment to creating a responsible and transparent supply chain," explains Marnix van Ginneken, Chief ESG & Legal Officer at Philips.
It is focusing on improving manufacturing efficiency, as evidenced by:
- Simplifying operations and regionalising its supply chain to mitigate challenges
- Reported sales of US$18.9bn with an adjusted EBITA margin of 11.5%
- A free cash flow of US$951m and improved credit rating outlook
Looking ahead, Philips remains committed to sustainable manufacturing.
"We remain focused on successfully executing our three-year plan and are determined to build on our industry-leading innovations," says CEO Roy Jakobs.
Marnix adds: "We are focused on executing our plan, improving fundamentals and simplifying how we work—ensuring we are more competitive and agile and delivering growth and margin expansion, with patient safety and quality as a priority."
Philips continues demonstrating that sustainable manufacturing practices can drive innovation and financial success in the healthcare technology sector.
