SolarEdge has achieved early cybersecurity certification and compliance with EU and UK rules
SolarEdge has announced early certification for its wireless connected products in line with Europe’s mandatory cybersecurity requirements

Based in Israel, SolarEdge is a global leader in smart energy technology — particularly solar inverters and energy storage solutions.

Founded in 2006, the company is a major player in renewable energy, optimising energy production in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

SolarEdge’s core services include inverter solutions, energy storage, EV charging, battery storage, smart homes, grid services and commercial and utility solutions.

Since its founding, SolarEdge has expanded its focus to include electric vehicle powertrain technology and is developing solutions for grid services, smart energy management and storage systems.

Europe’s mandatory cybersecurity requirements

Europe’s mandatory cybersecurity requirements stem from a range of regulatory frameworks aimed at strengthening digital resilience, protecting data and ensuring secure information exchanges across the EU.

Some of the core regulations include:

  • NIS2 Directive (Directive on Security of Network and Information Systems)
  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA)
  • Cybersecurity Act
  • EU Cybersecurity Strategy 2020

In particular, SolarEdge has achieved early certification and compliance with the European Commission’s New Radio Equipment Directive (RED) Article 3.3 requirements for cybersecurity and the UK’s Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulation.

Article 3.3 is expected to come into effect in August 2025 to establish a new regulatory framework for radio equipment and impose cybersecurity requirements for all applicable IoT products sold in Europe.

What does this mean for PV systems?

As part of the Article, PV systems that rely on wireless connectivity will be required to comply with a new and extensive series of cybersecurity requirements, focusing on the implementation of network protection features, personal data protection and the reduction of fraud risks.

In particular, the new regulation holds significance for the solar industry due to its expanding contributions to global energy generation and its importance as a critical energy infrastructure.

Ronen Faier, Interim CEO at SolarEdge Technologies

Ronen Faier, Interim CEO at SolarEdge Technologies, comments: “As a leader in the smart energy industry, SolarEdge has consistently prioritised safety and security in all our product design and we believe it is our responsibility to help set the benchmark for cybersecurity capabilities in PV technology.

"With the rapid growth of solar adoption, the need for non-negotiable cyber security regulations is critical to safeguarding future energy security. We are pleased to see Europe taking the lead with the forthcoming RED regulation, which will help ensure homeowners, businesses and grid operators embrace solar technology with more robust cyber defences in place.”
