Goodyear has unveiled the ElectricDrive Sustainable-Material (EDS) Tire as it endeavours to create the first 100% sustainable material tyre

As the automotive industry increasingly aligns itself with sustainability objectives, Goodyear is preparing to roll out the market's first initial tyre comprising entirely sustainable materials by 2030.

The shift highlights Goodyear's commitment not only to environmental stewardship but also to pioneering green innovations in the tyre manufacturing sector.

The grand reveal occurred at the ESG and Sustainable Development Leadership Forum during the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE), where Goodyear introduced the ElectricDrive Sustainable-Material (EDS) Tire.

This product is custom-built to cater to electric vehicles (EVs), promising enhanced performance and lower environmental impact.

Why sustainable tyres matter

"Goodyear has integrated corporate responsibility into its company culture," explained Nat Madarang, Goodyear Asia Pacific President, at the CIIE forum.

"This commitment is deeply rooted within Goodyear's corporate responsibility framework, known as Goodyear Better Future. The framework's pillars — sustainable sourcing, responsible operations, advanced mobility and inspiring culture — continue to guide Goodyear's global operations."

The EDS Tyre signifies a considerable advancement in tyre technology, specifically designed for the developing EV market.

It boasts remarkable attributes such as superior wet braking, enhanced handling and reduced noise levels coupled with lower rolling resistance, which collectively contribute to increased efficiency and performance.

The innovative composition of the tyre integrates sustainable elements like carbon black, reclaimed from end-of-life tyres, and recycled polyester, enhancing its environmental footprint.

Certification by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) attests to its use of sustainable materials. Moreover, beginning December 2024, this pioneering product will be available through the e-commerce giant, Tmall, offering EV owners a responsible choice.

Starting in the first quarter of 2025, the tyre will also hit other markets across the Asia-Pacific region.

Commitment to renewable practices

"Our commitment to sustainability and delivering value to our customers and other stakeholders is unwavering," says Mark Stewart, CEO and President at Goodyear.

Goodyear's Chief Executive Officer and President, Mark Stewart

"Our 2023 corporate responsibility report demonstrates how our associates around the world continue to help build a better future, from exploring new innovations and materials, to identifying and implementing new strategies to help us meet our corporate responsibility ambitions, to giving back to our communities in which we live and work."

Goodyear's commitment to sustainability is further underscored by its ambitious goals in the energy domain.

By 2030, Goodyear aims to power all its manufacturing processes with 100% renewable electricity and, by 2040, it plans to completely transition to renewable energy sources.

The development of a tyre made entirely from renewable materials and the elimination of petroleum-derived oils by 2040 are powerful demonstrations of Goodyear's dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and championing sustainability across its operations.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to adapt Goodyear's production practices and product offerings to better reflect the values of environmental responsibility and sustainability.

This strategic direction not only helps in mitigating the impact of climate change but also positions Goodyear as a leader in sustainable innovation within global tyre manufacturing.

Reaching milestones in China

This year marks a significant milestone for Goodyear, which is celebrating 30 years since it began its operations in China.

This anniversary coincides with the company receiving high honours at the ESG and Sustainability Leadership Forum, where it was recognised as one of the top nine corporations in China for excellent practices in corporate responsibility.

This acknowledgment underscores Goodyear's robust approach to integrating sustainability with advanced tyre technology, setting a benchmark for environmental stewardship in the tyre industry.

"We are thrilled to receive this recognition," added Nat Madarang.

"Goodyear's innovative spirit places us at the forefront of this mobility revolution as we collaborate with customers and innovators alike to shape its trajectory. We eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for mobility and are excited about our contributions to advancing tyre performance within this transformative landscape."
