The US$5.8bn electric arc furnace steel mill will serve as Hyundai Steel's first overseas production base, boosting jobs and sustainable steel in the US

Hyundai Steel has unveiled plans for a US$5.8 billion electric arc furnace (EAF)-based integrated steel mill in Louisiana, US.

The facility will focus on producing high-grade automotive steel while significantly reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace operations.

A major investment to boost the US steel sector, the project is expected to generate more than 1,300 jobs and contribute to the growth of automotive manufacturing in the US.

“Hyundai Steel's investment in an EAF-based integrated steel mill in the U.S. is anticipated to stimulate local economic growth, including the creation of new job opportunities," says Seo Gang-Hyun, Hyundai Steel President and CEO.

"We plan to supply automotive steel plates not only for Hyundai Motor and Kia’s strategic models but also to expand sales to U.S. automakers in the future"

The plant will integrate advanced direct reduced iron (DRI) technology, along with hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel plate production.

It represents Hyundai Steel's first overseas production base, positioning it strategically in a region with strong steel demand.

As the first EAF-based integrated steel mill in the US to oversee all stages of production from raw materials to finished products, the plant is expected to drive efficiency and sustainability.

The investment aligns with global efforts to transition towards environmentally friendly steel production and reduce supply chain carbon footprints.

Watch remarks from US President Donald Trump on Hyundai Steel's US expansion.

It also comes during a pivotal time, given US President Donald Trump's recent tariffs on steel and aluminium.

Strengthening the nation's steel manufacturing is vital to enable industry to navigate the tariffs associated economic and trade impact – without greatly increasing end costs for consumers.

President Trump is of the position that his administrations tariffs are driving unprecedented manufacturing investment in the US, a stance he expressed after his administration's deal with TSMC was announced. He shared the sentiment again following news of Hyundai Steel's US expansion.

"We've had a tremendous interest in our country, more than ever before," said Trump.

"There's never been anything like it. We're almost at a four trillion dollar level and that's something that's never happened.

"Hopefully that's because of the election on 5 November but its also because of tariffs, I suspect."

While tariffs undoubtedly incentivise global manufacturers to increase their US presence, it's questionable as to whether moves like this will outweigh the tariffs' broader impact on the sector and economy.

Either way, Hyundai Steel's US expansion will contribute to positive growth for US manufacturing, creating new job opportunities while supporting sustainable development.

Expanding global reach & competitiveness

Hyundai Steel is working closely with Hyundai Motor Group to secure investment and enhance the competitiveness of its US operations.

The company is also assessing potential equity partnerships with strategic investors to strengthen its financial foundation.

By establishing a US production base, Hyundai Steel aims to provide a reliable supply of high-quality steel to automakers, including Hyundai Motor and Kia.

The new plant's proximity to Hyundai's manufacturing sites in Montgomery, Alabama, and Kia's facility in West Point, Georgia, as well as the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Savannah, Georgia, will offer logistical advantages.

Beyond serving the US market, Hyundai Steel plans to expand its reach to Latin America and Europe. The company intends to collaborate with global automotive partners to advance research and development efforts, ensuring its steel products remain at the forefront of innovation.

Future sustainability plans

Following the success of its Louisiana facility, Hyundai Steel plans to introduce the EAF-based integrated steel mill system at its plants in South Korea.

This initiative will support the company’s long-term goal of achieving carbon-neutral production.

Hyundai Steel has a strong track record in EAF technology, having produced around one million metric tonnes of automotive steel plates using this method between 2007 and 2010.

In 2022, the company achieved a milestone by completing the world’s first test production of 1.0GPa-grade carbon-reduced high-strength steel plate using EAF technology.

By establishing a global production base, Hyundai Steel aims to secure a foundation for future growth while reinforcing its position as a leading steel manufacturer committed to sustainability and innovation.
