The LEGO Group will soon be opening its factory in Vietnam, now officially set for spring.

In preparation LEGO colleagues has moved from a temporary office in Ho Chi Minh City to a newly opened office building on-site at the new factory.

That's according to Klaus Gørrissen, Project Director at LEGO, who wrote on LinkedIn: "What a ride it has been.

"With this factory we for sure set a new benchmark in The LEGO Group on how to build safer, cheaper, faster but without compromising quality.

"I joined the project almost 4 years ago. Being part of conceptual, basic and technical design, construction and now standing in a completed state of the art factory is truly an experience for life.

"It has been so inspiring to work with so many dedicated and passioned colleagues around the globe. I am extremely proud of the team and maybe also a bit of myself."

Costing US$1bn in construction and installation costs, the factory was reportedly 90% completed, according to an official LEGO announcement on 6 November 2024.

Located in Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park III in Binh Duong, extensive action has been taken to ensure the factory's operational success and future workforce.

With the factory set to open in spring, LEGO meets its promises that it would open in the first half of 2025.

A rigorous testing process

In developing the new factory in Vietnam, LEGO has initiated a rigorous systems testing phase and meticulous approach to the installation of advanced production equipment.

There was a months-long journey to fine-tune operations and ensure compliance with Lego’s stringent global standards.

By initiating this testing period, the company worked to validate the efficiency, safety and reliability of the factory’s operations before scaling up production.

This process has ensured that every Lego brick produced at the Vietnam facility meets the same high-quality standards as those manufactured in its other global plants.

As LEGO expands into Vietnam, it's upskilling workers

Expanding the group's workforce in Vietnam

As part of its growth strategy, LEGO has endeavoured to increaser its workforce in Vietnam, which doubled by the end of 2024.

In 2024, Manufacturing Digital reported on the company's comprehensive training programme in the nation, designed to equip hundreds of employees with vital digital skills and technical knowledge.

The programme covers both local-on-the-job training and hands-on-learning overseas at the company's global network of factories.

It provides vital exposure to essential manufacturing functions, including moulding and packing, ensuring the workforce is well-prepared for the factory’s full-scale operations.

This initiative is just one example of the LEGO Group's investment in the future of manufacturing workers, as it expands into South-East Asia and beyond.

The LEGO Group: leading on sustainability

The LEGO Group has ensured the new factory is its most sustainable to date, implementing measures to reduce energy consumption and maximise the use of renewable energy sources.

A key initiative includes the installation of 12,400 rooftop solar panels, completed in the third quarter of 2024.

These panels are projected to generate approximately 7.4 MWp, providing enough energy to power around 1,270 households annually.

This investment aligns with LEGO’s broader sustainability strategy, reinforcing its commitment to reducing environmental impact while expanding its global manufacturing footprint.

Jesper Hassellund Mikkelsen, Senior Vice President and General Manager of LEGO Manufacturing Vietnam

"At LEGO Group, sustainability is more than just a commitment; it’s woven into the very fabric of our business and our new factory," said Jesper Hassellund Mikkelsen, Senior Vice President of Asia Operations and General Manager of Lego Manufacturing Vietnam, at an event at press event at the Vietnam factory on 6 November 2024.

"Just as LEGO bricks are built to last and inspire creativity for generations, we want children to inherit a healthy planet.

"We’re determined to play our part in making that happen, and there’s no time to waste."
