IKEA: unwrapped, just in time for christmas
A fantastic deep-dive on IKEA, exploring how its manufacturing process commits to principles of sustainability and efficiency

Welcome back to Manufacturing Unwrapped, where we review some of our favourite pieces of the last year.

This installment reflects on a great deep-dive by our Deputy Editor Libby Hargreeves on IKEA's transformative journey from a small Swedish business to a global powerhouse.

Here's a recap of what you might have missed.

IKEA: Innovative Design & Efficient Supply Chain Management

IKEA has a strategic approach to supply chain management

Three things characterise IKEA's manufacturing transformation: innovation, adaptability and sustainability.

Libby recounts how the company first revolutionised the furniture industry back in 1943 with its unique flat-pack designs and self-assembly products, making quality furniture affordable and accessible.

IKEA's commitment to "Democratic Design" integrates five key elements: function, form, quality, sustainability and price.

It's approach that ensures that every product, like the versatile FLISAT desk, delivers both value and environmental consciousness.

Libby also emphasizes how IKEA's global success has been driven by its development and management of an extensive and efficient supply chain.

This supply chain is supported by regional manufacturing hubs and partnerships with over 1,200 suppliers.

These efforts enable the company to maintain low costs while catering to diverse markets.

To mitigate future risk surrounding supply chain disruptions, IKEA is being proactive.

The manufacturer is strengthening its local production footprint, particularly in the Americas, to reduce reliance on long-distance trade.

Sustainability at its core

The piece highlighted how much sustainability is at the heart of IKEA's mission.

It explored how the company is transitioning to renewable and recycled materials, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

This was highlighted through innovations like the SILVERSIDA tableware, made from recycled ceramic waste which demonstrates IKEA’s commitment to circular production practices.

In 2023, IKEA notably achieved a 12% reduction in emissions, partly by switching to renewable energy across 408 manufacturing facilities.

Libby highlights how despite challenges like rising transportation and fuel costs, IKEA does not compromise its goal to support customers through economic uncertainty.

She highlights a quote by CEO Jesper Brodin where he emphasizes prioritising affordability over profits to align with IKEA's ethos of helping people create a better everyday life.

Through its enduring focus on innovation, sustainability, and customer value, IKEA continues to lead the furniture industry while setting a benchmark for responsible business practices.

Why is this piece a favourite?

This piece makes it into manufacturing unwrapped due to IKEA's fascinating journey and sustainable manufacturing strategy.

Balancing this with affordability can be a challenge, but it's an approach IKEA is firmly committed to.

The summary of its approach is excellent, making this piece a great start for any manufacturer seeking to learn from IKEA.
