Rolls-Royce Submarines will consolidate support that powers the Royal Navy's submarine fleet under the new contract- here's its impact on UK manufacturing

Rolls-Royce Submarines has secured its largest-ever UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract, marking a significant milestone in the manufacturers history.

The agreement termed the Unity contract spans eight years and serves to consolidate the research and technology, design, manufacturing, and in-service support for the nuclear reactors that power the Royal Navy’s fleet of submarines.

This comprehensive deal will create a unified and integrated capability portfolio, significantly shaping the future of UK manufacturing and defence.

Inside the Unity contract

The Unity contract is designed to increase efficiency and simplify the relationship between Rolls Royce Submarines and the Royal Navy, leading to improved outcomes.

Rolls-Royce is currently responsible for designing, building and maintaining all of the nuclear reactors powering the Royal Navy’s submarines.

Valued at approximately US$11.2bn, the eight-year Unity contract expands to cover the full lifecycle support for the UK's submarine fleet, the development of the the initial phase of the SSN-AUKUS contracts and ongoing assistance with the development and commissioning of the Dreadnought Class submarines.

Representing a major commitment from both the UK government and the industry, this deal will generate thousands of highly skilled manufacturing jobs across the UK and ensure long-term support for the nuclear deterrent.

This partnership will help boost manufacturing in the UK, building a more robust industrial future.

"We’re delighted to announce the Unity contract, which confirms our commitment to the Royal Navy and the Defence Nuclear Enterprise," says Steve Carlier, President Rolls-Royce Submarines.

"This long-term contract enables us to invest in the right skills, equipment, and facilities to play our part in protecting UK interests at home and overseas.

“The Unity contract enables our business to work truly collaboratively with the Ministry of Defence, meeting the evolving needs of the UK Royal Navy, further improving reactor plant design, delivery and in-service support, ensuring the continuing security of our nation at a time of global uncertainty.”

The impact on UK manufacturing

This contract is set to have a significant impact on UK manufacturing, primarily through creating new labour opportunities and revitalising the sector.

Rolls-Royce Submarines expects to create an additional 1,000 jobs, primarily in Derby by the end of the contract, announcing satellite offices recently announced in Glasgow and Cardiff.

This job creation is crucial to meeting the growing demands of the Royal Navy, and the highly skilled workforce will ensure continued resilience and capability in the UK nuclear industry.

As demand for nuclear expertise rises across both the defence and civil sectors, this long-term investment is vital for the future of the UK’s national security and industry.

It also strengthens the country’s home-grown talent pool and promotes proactive collaboration within the UK nuclear sector.

All of this will work to revitalise UK manufacturing, building resilience, collaboration and capability.

Sir Chris Gardner KBE, CEO Submarine Delivery Agency

“Bringing together existing commercial arrangements, it is a clear signal of our commitment to deliver greater effectiveness, efficiency, and agility to meet the needs of the Defence Nuclear Enterprise and support the Royal Navy’s submarines now and into the future," says Sir Chris Gardner KBE, CEO Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA).

“It will also enable a critical pipeline of home-grown nuclear skills and provides Rolls-Royce with the longer-term contractual security to plan and develop the existing and future workforce”.

The contract will provide significant opportunities for the UK supply chain, with the vast majority of it based within the country. By fostering long-term, strategic partnerships, the Unity contract enables the development of enhanced capabilities, creating a more competitive and resilient supply chain that will benefit the broader UK economy.

Defence Secretary, John Healey MP

“In line with our upcoming defence industrial strategy, this deal with Rolls Royce, a historic British success-story, will support high-skilled UK jobs who equip the thousands of submariners that keep us all safe," adds Defence Secretary, John Healey MP.

"We are showing defence can be an engine for growth, while also driving better value for taxpayer money.

“National security is a foundation of our government’s plan for change, and this is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the UK’s nuclear deterrent, which is our ultimate insurance policy in a more dangerous world.”
