Siemens: Manufacturing Italy's Green Mobility Transition
Siemens eMobility is helping to manufacture the future of sustainable public transport in Tuscany, Italy.
Partnering with Autolinee Toscane, a prominent public transport operator within the RATP DEV Italia Group, Siemens is spearheading the electrification of multiple bus depots in Florence, Prato and Lucca.
The initiative will be critical to the deployment of a zero-emission bus fleet across the region and features the installation of 73 SICHARGE UC charging points, delivering 100 and 150 kW of power for efficient and reliable electric vehicle charging.
Siemens has also integrated medium and low-voltage electrical distribution systems equipped with IoT-enabled switches, ensuring a dependable and transparent energy supply.
To further streamline operations, Siemens eMobility has introduced its DepotFinity software platform, which performs comprehensive monitoring, reporting, programming and management of charging processes within the depots.
Through DepotFinity, Autolinee Toscane benefits from advanced smart charging logic, enabling the optimisation of energy loads according to operational demands.
The platform also facilitates the pre-conditioning of vehicle batteries and provides detailed reporting on the mileage covered by each bus.
These innovations underscore Siemens’ commitment to enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of Tuscany’s public transport network.
Implementing charging infrastructure for IPLANET
Siemens eMobility is also collaborating with energy transition solutions provider IPLANET to revolutionise 120 logistics sites across Italy.
This process involves the deployment of advanced charging infrastructure, including integrated Point of Sale (POS) systems compliant with the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). These systems enable seamless activation via app or QR code and include interactive screens to ensure accessibility for users with disabilities.
Hundreds of 300-400 kW charging points will be installed via this project, all of which will be supported by independent connectivity channels for remote monitoring and management, a robust setup that ensures high reliability and availability across the network.
On top of this, the sites are equipped with scalable compact transformer substations, medium and low-voltage electrical distribution systems and telecontrol capabilities, facilitating seamless integration with renewable energy sources.
Several turnkey service areas within the IPLANET project are already operational, boasting photovoltaic installations, battery energy storage systems (BESS) for parking areas and specialised facilities for heavy-duty electric vehicle (e-truck) charging.
These advancements are building the future of sustainable and strategic service areas, transforming traditional petrol stations into green mobility hubs.
