Siemens and Tietoevry, a leading Nordic digital engineering and software company, have teamed to advance the energy transition
Siemens and Nordic technology company Tietoevry have partnered to accelerate digital transformation for grid operators and enhance regional manufacturing

Siemens and leading Nordic digital engineering and software company Tietoevry have teamed up.

Together both companies are accelerating the digital transformation of energy manufacturing in Northern and Central Europe, using Siemens' Gridscale X software platform.

Tietoevry supports energy manufacturers with next-generation industrial solutions to enhance business performance, increase productivity and digitalise the value chain.

In conjunction with its own IT services, Tietoevry will use Siemens's platform to enhance its solutions to better support grid operators in the Nordics.

This will be crucial as operators need to navigate the challenges related to the energy transition, which include the need for robust and resilient infrastructure and a dramatic increase of grid capacity.

Exploring GridscaleX

Gridscale X by Siemens is an advanced software platform that helps grid operations manage the modern energy transition.

Launched earlier this year, Gridscale X is part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio which provides manufacturers ultimate interoperability, modularity and cybersecurity.

With the primary aim of facilitating autonomous grid management, Gridscale X enables manufacturers to rapidly scale utility capacity, integrate distributed energy resources and enhance grid flexibility.

Two flagship applications of the platform suite are its Protection Data Manager and Dynamic Line Rating.

The Protection Data Manager streamlines the management of grid protection equipment data, significantly reducing manual effort and operational costs.

Meanwhile Dynamic Line Rating uses real-time environmental data to optimise grid capacity, potentially increasing transmission efficiency by 10-15% while minimising congestion costs.

Gridscale X aligns with Siemens' vision for a sustainable and energy efficient future, enabling energy manufacturers to better meet the demands of dynamic grids.

Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO Siemens Grid Software

“Grid requirements are changing tremendously, driven by a seven-fold increase in distributed energy resources, putting enormous pressure on power utilities. Gridscale X enables grid operators to rethink grid management, increase capacity fast, and leverage distributed energy resources to improve customer satisfaction," says Sabine Erlinghagen, CEO Siemens Grid Software.

"It ultimately empowers utilities to reach net zero, while keeping their grids stable and reliable."

The drive to strengthen the grid

As energy systems face mounting pressure from climate change and rising electricity demand, the need to manufacture sustainable energy is paramount.

Integrating renewable energy sources into existing electrical grid systems however is not an easy task.

Existing systems were never designed to handle the demands of clean energy sources like solar and  wind, which require smart grid technologies and storage solutions.

Nor were they built to withstand the impact of extreme weather events which are growing more frequent with climate change.

Additionally, many of these systems have old or ageing infrastructure.

In many developed countries their energy systems exceed their intended lifespans, leading to heightened vulnerability to failure and inefficiencies.

On top of all this, is the concern of cybersecurity.

Digitalisation and interconnected systems increase exposure to cyberattacks that could impact critical energy supplies.

But the shift to this type of system is vital to creating a more sustainable future.

Addressing these challenges will demand coordinated efforts, innovative technologies, and significant investments to create a future-ready, resilient, and sustainable grid.

“The ongoing energy transition requires significant changes to the existing grid infrastructure and how it is managed," says Magnus Torronen, Head of Siemens Grid Software in Northern Europe.

"Due to the electrification of everything, and rapid growth of distributed energy resources, companies need to think about new ways of working and collaborating. We need to look across sectors and the ecosystem, leverage the strengths of different organisations, and collaborate to successfully and quickly meet our net zero targets.

"Partnering with Tietoevry enables us to support utilities in a completely new way.”

Niko Jauhiainen, Head of Asset & Data Solutions, Energy & Utilities, Tietoevry

“The partnership, leveraging Siemens expertise and the Gridscale X software platform, helps us add more capabilities to our next-generation solutions supporting our utility customers in grid life-cycle management and addressing challenges related to grid flexibility,” added Niko Jauhiainen, Head of Asset & Data Solutions, Energy & Utilities, Tietoevry.
