The University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) has appointed Phillipa Glover, a UK manufacturing leader as an Honorary Senior Fellow. Phillipa has a lengthy track record of working with industrial communities to boost economic and technological growth. Having held senior roles at OMRON, P&G, Nutricia SSL International and CNC Robotics, Phillipa is a passionate advocate for the manufacturing sector.

“To be awarded such a prestigious title from the University of Liverpool feels a huge privilege,” Phillipa commented.

“ Institutions such as the University of Liverpool help to inspire, innovate, and drive positive change across the region and beyond.”

Liverpool has a reputation as the digital manufacturing hub of the UK, as remarked by former Siemens CEO Jurgen Maier, with the region continuing to live up to this reputation. The VEC is the UK’s leading independent centre for digital transformation and industrial innovation and Liverpool University as a whole continues to work to advance high-growth innovation across governmental bodies and businesses. This is through helping to create effective policy and structural programmes for economic development and by championing digital transformation.

Phillipa’s role will include helping to deliver and integrate new partnerships, inform the government and lead activities focused on promoting UK manufacturing and reindustrialisation. Her appointment is a testament to how deeply her contributions and experience embody VEC’s ambitions and the university’s values.

“As a local resident, I look forward to using this award to support the University, its students, and the wider community to continue to develop the work they do to support and inspire our community and work towards delivering inclusive economic growth,” Phillipa added.

Phillipa will help the VEC develop new impactful initiatives to support UK manufacturing and evolve as an institution, serving as an ambassador for the value of STEM subjects and careers in British industry. With her expertise and experience, Phillipa will help address the digital skills and hiring gap in manufacturing, proposing new methods for upskilling future generations.

In addition to her business success, Phillipa is a Commissioner for Made Smarter and a valued Industrial Advisory Board Member at a national and regional level. In 2022 she joined Mayor Steve Rotherham’s Innovation Board, with a vision to cement the Liverpool City Region as a hub for digital innovation, to increase R&D spending to 5% of GVA by 2030.

“Philippa is a committed and creative industrial leader with a commitment to Liverpool City Region and the UK manufacturing sector. “ said Andrew Borland, Chief Innovation Officer of VEC.

“ A scientist turned manufacturing leader with the drive and vision to help policymakers and political leaders understand the importance of fusing R&D, education, and skills for industry to deliver a sustainable future. VEC looks forward to working with Philippa to help develop a new generation of industrial innovation programmes and foster the next generation of industrial leaders.”
