A US$100bn UK-US alliance led by Rolls-Royce and BWXT aims to scale small modular reactor manufacturing and boost energy security, jobs and economic growth

A strategic alliance between the UK and US, spearheaded by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, focuses on the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs), often referred to as 'mini-nukes'.

The programme looks set to redefine the manufacturing scope for nuclear technology with significant contributions from Rolls-Royce.

The evolving partnership between Rolls-Royce and BWXT has now been enhanced with five new agreements, accumulating to a substantial deal value of US$100bn.

This collaboration places Rolls-Royce in a pivotal position to bolster the economic development of both the US and UK, particularly within the manufacturing sector.

Rolls-Royce's pioneering role

Renowned for powering modern infrastructures with innovative engineering, Rolls-Royce has a legacy of delivering cutting-edge solutions across various sectors.

The company’s diverse product range includes:

  • Civil aerospace: Aero engines for commercial, regional, and business aviation
  • Defence: Aero engines for military applications and helicopters
  • Power systems: High-speed engines, propulsion systems, and energy solutions

Earlier this year, the UK Government entrusted Rolls-Royce with the task of leading the country's SMR development efforts, a decision that is set to fortify the country's capabilities in nuclear manufacturing.

This initiative is expected to create 3,000 jobs during peak construction phases and enhance energy security, alongside stimulating regional economic growth.

The UK-US partnership substantially accelerates the UK's nuclear ambitions by streamlining the reactor design approval process, cutting the time from blueprint to operational status considerably.

This ensures that upon safety validation in one nation within the agreement, the designs are accepted seamlessly across borders, reducing the typical approval period from four years to two.

Manufacturing synergies across borders

The Atlantic Partnership for Advanced Nuclear Energy is pivotal in connecting the UK, the world's first industrial nation, with the US, its largest economic counterpart.

This collaboration is poised to inject substantial capital into both countries as the global nuclear energy market is set to grow substantially, potentially reaching US$51.8bn by 2035.

As an industry leader, Rolls-Royce anticipates that the market's worth could escalate to several trillions by 2050. The company is committed to substantial transformations in manufacturing processes to foster innovation and job creation, ultimately supporting economic expansion in both the UK and the US.

Tufan Erginbilgic, CEO of Rolls-Royce, says: "We welcome the commitment of the US and UK Governments to accelerate the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies and secure an independent supply of advanced nuclear fuel. Nuclear will play a critical role in the energy resilience and security of both nations.

"Rolls-Royce has unique capabilities in nuclear as the only company globally with full lifecycle experience, end-to-end capability and an established supply-chain.

“Delivering our three SMRs will enable us to support an average of almost 8,000 highly skilled UK jobs per year and accelerate the delivery of power to the grid, reducing energy bills, to the mid-2030s," Tufan adds.

“We are also pleased to announce we have entered the US regulatory process for our SMR, a critical step to paving the way for additional jobs and investment potential in the US."

Meeting evolving energy needs

This nuclear investment initiative is set to create myriad job opportunities, reflecting a productive future for the UK’s workforce.

Ed Miliband, UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, adds: "The nuclear opportunities Rolls-Royce is exploring in the US represent the potential for exceptional job creation and economic growth in the UK, after Rolls-Royce was selected by Great British Energy – Nuclear earlier this year as a preferred bidder to build the UK's first small modular nuclear reactors.

“By working with the US, we will reap the benefits of this golden age of nuclear, powering British homes with clean, homegrown energy, delivering well-paid skilled jobs and getting energy bills down for good.”

Rolls-Royce has designed its SMRs to supply 470 megawatts each, crucial for addressing energy demands, particularly as digital and AI-driven advancements drive electricity consumption.

By 2050, US nuclear energy demand could see a fourfold increase from its current level.

Rolls-Royce states: "Secure, scalable and reliable power across civil, defence, industrial and maritime sectors is needed to meet growing demands in digital and AI."

This nuclear partnership illustrates an essential step toward sustainable energy solutions, with Rolls-Royce poised to play an integral role in the future of nuclear manufacturing.
