Why Have Sales of Elon Musk's Tesla Cybertruck Plummeted?

In a year defined by significant volatility within the electric vehicle market, the Tesla Cybertruck has faced a series of complex manufacturing and logistical obstacles.
While the vehicle features a distinctive look, the pickup recorded the most substantial volume-based sales decline of any electric vehicle in the US during 2025.
Data from Cox Automotive indicates that Tesla sold approximately 39,000 units during the first full year of production in 2024. However, this production and sales volume was reduced by nearly 50% in 2025, with estimates suggesting only 20,200 vehicles reached customers.
The Cybertruck ended 2024 as the leading electric pickup in the US, utilising advanced engineering features such as a steer-by-wire system to capture initial market interest. However, in a sector where few models surpass 40,000 annual units, the vehicle faced a steeper decline than its counterparts.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has described the vehicle as the company's "best product ever" and he previously set an ambitious manufacturing target of 250,000 annual units.
The current trajectory indicates that the company overestimated the long-term scalability of such a specialised design.
Managing factory throughput and capacity
While the Tesla facility in Texas has the installed capacity to produce more than 125,000 units every year, the broader economic landscape has altered the feasibility of maintaining high output.
The removal of the US$7,500 clean-vehicle tax credit in 2025 created significant challenges for the production line.
Even before this change, consumer interest was moving to more conventional, high-utility options. Over 24 electric models saw production and sales numbers fall last year, including the Model Y, which experienced a 15,000-unit decrease.
While this was only a 4% change for the Model Y, the sharp drop for the Cybertruck highlights the risks involved in scaling niche products with complex material requirements.
Challenges of stainless steel fabrication
According to Cox Automotive data regarding the Chevrolet Equinox EV, sales doubled to nearly 58,000 units by prioritising a more traditional assembly approach that appeals to a broader demographic.
Meanwhile, the Cybertruck’s design and materials continue to divide opinion. Elon's public profile has also influenced opinion among more left-leaning customers, which indicates the vehicle is viewed more as a political statement than a utilitarian piece of equipment.
This shift, coupled with a launch price of US$79,000, may have alienated the broader consumer base required to sustain high sales and high-volume factory operations.
Rectifying technical and mechanical failures
Technical hurdles and quality control issues have further complicated the vehicle's manufacturing lifecycle.
Since 2023, the Cybertruck has been subject to 10 recalls, covering a range of software and mechanical concerns that have impacted consumer confidence.
These issues include "accelerator pedals that could get trapped at full throttle", according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA also reported an "optional off-road light bar that may detach and fly off the truck..
Issues with the large windshield wiper assembly also generated significant negative attention.
At the same time, the physical characteristics of the vehicle, including its sharp edges, restrict its global supply chain potential due to stringent pedestrian safety standards in Europe and China.
