Smurfit Kappa’s dedication to innovation has paid off, as the business went home with a prestigious prize won at the FlexoTech International Print & Innovations Awards last week.

Smurfit Kappa has once again been recognised as a leader in the packaging industry, with its pre-print liner – designed for the beer brand Beck’s – earning the top award in the Sacks and Corrugated Pre-Print Liner award category.

The liner requires a high concentration of ink coverage to achieve the hyper-realistic look required by Beck’s, for which Smurfit Kappa used composite colours for the brand’s vivid green and black shades and put the bottle image in the spotlight.

82% of purchasing decisions are made by shoppers whilst in-store, meaning pressure to create dramatic packaging is at an all-time high. The packaging for Beck’s is exceedingly striking and stands out amongst competitors which simply use their own logos for marketing.

Chris Shaw, General Manager of Smurfit Kappa CRP Pre-Print, commented: “I am delighted for Smurfit Kappa to have been recognised as a winner in this area. For designs requiring a photo-realistic finish and high-volume production, pre-print is a valued option so we are seeing many customers choosing this for their products.

“This achievement is thanks to the dedication and hard work of our experienced printers and graphics teams.”

The 2017 FlexoTech awards were announced at a gala event in London.
