Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) sees sustainable power as a non-negotiable
In order to expand its sustainable manufacturing, ABB has acquired SEAM Group and entered into a partnership with SIA to ensure continued reliable power

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) sees sustainable power as a non-negotiable in the auto manufacturing industry and credits its production of 300,000 vehicles in 2023 to its reliance on clean power.

SIA has partnered with ABB, which has dedicated teams on call to support manufacturers, to ensure success across 2024.

ABB's partnership with SIA pioneers green manufacturing

Automation leader ABB is building a sustainable and resource-efficient future with robotics, electrification and industrial technology. Based in Zürich, Switzerland, ABB was founded in 1988. Its 105,000 employees are ‘committed to driving innovations that accelerate industrial transformation’. The company featured in our Top 10: Manufacturing Technology Companies, for its use of smart manufacturing across its operations.

The SIA plant in Lafayette, Indiana, is dedicated to “finding new and innovative ways to become better stewards of our environment” that are linked to their electrification needs.

SIA was the first US auto plant to earn ISO 14001 Certification for Environmental Management (1998), achieve zero landfill (2004) and earn ISO 50001 Certification for Energy Management (2012).

Subaru shared some statistics with Manufacturing Digital about the SIA plant:
  • SIA currently has capacity to produce up to 400,000 vehicles annually
  • SIA produces roughly half of all Subaru vehicles purchased in North America
  • SIA currently produces the Ascent, Crosstrek, Legacy and Outback models

For partner ABB, SIA's pioneering achievements in environmental management and energy efficiency are a testament to their forward-thinking ethos.

“ABB is honoured to stand as SIA’s long-term trusted partner in powering their remarkable journey of growth and sustainability,” an ABB spokesperson exclusively told Manufacturing Digital. “Our envisage® energy management system is a cornerstone of our shared commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices, enabling real-time monitoring and anomaly detection to ensure reliable power supply. Together, we're not just keeping the lights on—we're illuminating the path towards a greener and more efficient tomorrow.”

ABB strengthens its sustainability solutions with SEAM Group

In another sustainability step forward, ABB has announced its acquisition of SEAM Group, an asset management provider, which works across industrial building markets.

“We signed an agreement to acquire SEAM Group that will expand our services footprint in the US, fortify our product offering in segments like commercial buildings and light industrial, and accelerate our advisory services solutions for our customers,” said Pedro Robredo, Senior Vice President Services, Americas Hub ABB. “I’m looking forward to integrating our organisations and our complimentary portfolios to grow the business together and deliver solutions to our customers that enhance their operations and help them meet their sustainability goals.”
