Amazon Web Services and Deloitte have joined forces to deliver innovative training and creation solutions to the manufacturing workforce

In the manufacturing sector there is a pressing need to develop the digital skills and training of frontline workers.

This need is driven by the rise of Industry 4.0 technologies, which require correct utilisation to have their desired productivity, efficiency and safety benefits.

The increasing complexity of new processes, parts and assets demand quicker upskilling, and the gap left behind by the mass retirement of the current ageing workforce needs to be filled by new skilled talent.

With increasing market demands, rapid innovation, high asset complexity, ageing workforces and rising labour costs, manufacturers are increasingly turning to technological innovation as a tool to address their training needs.

Industry 4.0 offers faster, more direct and more cost-effective training opportunities, benefitting overall manufacturing operation

Amazon Web Services and Deloitte are embracing this, partnering to present innovative augmented reality and generative AI training solutions to the manufacturing sector.

PwC's study 'Seeing Is Believing' into the benefits of VR/AR training found that virtual learning, or 'v-learning' as they call it is the most cost-effective way of learning when done on a large scale.

PwC found that 40% of the v-learners saw a 35% improvement over e-learners when it came to acting on what they learned after training in VR.

They completed training four times faster and were four times more focused than e-learning peers.

The study is part of a growing body of evidence highlighting that humans learn better in three-dimensional environments similar to everyday life.

Decision-making is rendered more precise, distractions are reduced and the consequences of errors are more immediate.

To help clarify complex procedures, field workers using the solution developed by Deloitte’s Unlimited Reality™ practice can access 3D models, images, videos, and step-by-step instructions overlaid onto their environment

Integrating advanced technology and infrastructure with AR and VR applications enables the capture, modelling and simulation of reality with real-time interactive experiences and contextual data.

Leveraging technologies that enable extended reality (xR) creates a further layer of immersive digital reality that is especially beneficial for training manufacturing workers.

Deloitte's Unlimited Reality™ practice creates digital replicas of operating environments and assets, enabling manufacturers to simulate varying situations and configurations to design, experiment and optimise.

Key Features of Deloitte’s Unlimited Reality™
  • AR headsets project job aids into the field of vision, with resources queried in natural language using AWS’s Q generative AI enterprise assistant
  • AR-guided work instructions are supplemented with relevant product and operational documentation and 3D models for on-the-job upskilling
  • AWS-powered generative AI integration provides workers with intelligent assistance at the point of need
  • Integration with legacy backend systems (e.g., ERP, FSM, PLM) for bi-directional access to essential product and operational documentation
  • Enterprise-grade data management via a Spatial Data Lake platform
A field worker solution developed by Deloitte’s Unlimited Reality™ practice features a step-by- step AR work instruction experience, featuring 3D models of semiconductor manufacturing machinery and a custom Generative AI solution

With the consequences of downtime and accidents being extremely high, frontline manufacturing workers need to make quick, precise decisions that take into account their wider environment.

To make these decisions, they need access to information and data- that historically has been filed away in physical documents or on legacy systems like Excel.

Through the fusion of Deloitte's Unlimited Reality™ practice with AWS's Amazon Q for business, this rapid decision-making is made significantly easier.

Amazon Q for Business is a new generative AI-powered assistant that gives employees the power to ask questions and receive immediate, comprehensive answers.

For field workers this transforms their working experience, enabling them to access the knowledge and training they need to best tackle the job in front of them.

Moving toward an unlimited future in technology convergence

This solution addresses frontline worker needs by enabling faster learning and safer operations, positively impacting productivity and cost management.

Additionally, it creates potential new revenue streams for manufacturing and field service organisations, adding value throughout organisations.

This innovation highlights the potential of technological convergence- to create profound, tailored new opportunities to enhance training and productivity.

As Industry 4.0 continues to advance, leaders like AWS and Deloitte will continue to create solutions that tackle the prominent challenges of the manufacturing sector.
