While just five years old, Siemens Energy has years of history and expertise in the energy industry
Siemens Energy has reached its five-year anniversary with projects in the works across green hydrogen, natural gas and power generation with carbon capture

Siemens Energy’s technology supports around one-sixth of the world’s total power generation.

While the company itself was formally established just five years ago, its roots trace back to 1847 with the founding of Siemens.

This rich heritage in energy innovation continues to drive Siemens Energy forward as it plays a key role in advancing the global shift towards cleaner, more sustainable power.

“Long before April 2020, our engineers were already electrifying cities, industries and entire countries,” said Christian Bruch, CEO at Siemens Energy on LinkedIn.

“At a time when electricity was still a marvel, they were already building the foundations of the energy systems we rely on today.

“That same drive to energise society has never faded.”

More than 100,000 Siemens Energy employees are working across over 90 countries to carry this legacy forward through the energy transition.

Siemens Energy: a brief history

Telegraphen Bau-Anstalt von Siemens & Halske was established in 1847 with a focus on telegraph construction.

The company soon expanded into electrical engineering, paving the way for Werner von Siemens’ discovery of the dynamo-electric principle in 1866.

This discovery laid the groundwork for Siemens’ ventures in energy technology.

In 1895, Siemens constructed South Africa’s first power plant and introduced high-voltage direct current transmission systems in 1903.

The company developed its first gas turbine for power generation in 1957 and made its entry into the wind energy sector in 2004, helping to drive the shift towards lower-carbon energy solutions.

Siemens Energy was founded in 2020

Formed as an independent company in 2020, Siemens Energy remains dedicated to delivering sustainable energy solutions under the leadership of Christian Bruch. The company’s emphasis is on innovative approaches to tackling the world’s most pressing energy challenges.

Siemens Energy’s achievements

The spin-off of Siemens Energy was strategically designed to refine its operations and place a stronger focus on sustainability within the energy sector.

Siemens Energy has since become a global leader, providing cutting-edge technologies for power generation and transmission systems. These solutions are geared towards reducing carbon emissions and improving overall efficiency.

Christian said: “Energy demand isn’t just growing – it is transforming. The world needs resilient energy systems.

“With all eyes on the future, we have the technology, the experience and the people to build that transforming energy world.”

Siemens Energy: spearheading sustainable power projects

Siemens Energy is leading projects across the globe that aim to increase energy production while prioritising sustainability.

The company has won a US$1.6bn contract in Saudi Arabia to provide essential technologies for two gas-fired power plants, Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2.

These will contribute 3.6 gigawatts to the national grid and are designed to be compatible with advanced carbon capture technologies.

"Supplying key technologies for the Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 power plants directly supports Saudi Arabia’s energy transition and its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2060," said Ahmed ElSerry, Head of Gas Services Sales, Middle East at Siemens Energy.

”By manufacturing critical components at our Siemens Energy Dammam Hub, this project further strengthens local production capabilities and builds expertise within the Kingdom, contributing to a more resilient energy sector.”

Siemens Energy is making significant progress in hydrogen technology through a major initiative in Germany, in partnership with the utility company EWE.

The project includes the delivery of a 280-megawatt electrolysis system capable of producing up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen each year, marking a key advancement in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

“This project is an important element in the ramp-up of the green hydrogen industry in Germany,” said Anne-Laure de Chammard, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy.

"With the long-awaited funding commitments, the German government has placed the final piece of the puzzle to realize strategically important projects like this on a large scale.

“The immediate conclusion of the contract with EWE demonstrates that the industry is ready to swiftly implement these projects."
