Merck, the pharmaceutical giant, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with technology leader Siemens to help digitally transform strategic projects across its three core business sectors.

This agreement will expand both companies' smartfacturing (smart manufacturing) cooperation and outline next collaborative steps for project transformation.

Siemens is Merck’s global preferred supplier for its next-level automation, due to the power and functionality of the Siemens Xcelerator platform.

Merck: A Bold Transformation Agenda

Driving this partnership is Merck’s ambition to embrace smartfacturing by digitally transforming its manufacturing processes.

The MoU introduces a centralised governance structure and contractual framework which will fast-track the partner agreement and streamline decision-making.

This will make pursuing new business opportunities and industry-defining advancements easier.

The Siemens Xcelerator platform is critical to this partnership, providing Merck with hardware and advanced software solutions to enhance the effectiveness of digital transformation initiatives.

Kai Beckmann, CEO Electronics business and Member of the Executive Board of Merck

"Our goal is to bring new products to market faster, more cost-effectively, and with a heightened focus on sustainability," says Kai Beckmann.

"Smartfacturing is essential to achieving this, and Siemens is the perfect partner for this journey.

"Their deep domain expertise and century-long familiarity with Merck uniquely positions them to rapidly implement and scale our vision.”

Siemens: The Perfect Partner

One key element of scaling Merck's vision is enabling them to boost modular production through the plug & produce principle.

This approach enables individual process modules to be reconfigured, removed or added with ease, reducing time to market, cutting CO2 emissions and lowering investment costs.

Merck and Siemens have collaborated previously in this area, boosting the modular manufacturing line for GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) production at Merck.

Through new automation technologies and standards like MTP (Module Type Package) the facility was ensured to reach the highest standards of safety and quality.

Ultimately this helped Merck safeguard patient health, adhere to stringent industry requirements and reinforce its commitment to excellence.

The collaboration between Merck and Siemens will create growth and boost innovation across both companies.

Cedrik Neike, CEO Digital Industries and Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG

"Healthcare, Life Science, and Electronics are at the core of improving lives and creating a more sustainable future," says Cedrik Neike.

By combining Merck’s expertise in these vital sectors with Siemens’ cutting-edge hardware and software we are transitioning from a concept of mass production to a modular approach, saving time and increasing flexibility."

"With the MoU, we now aim to set new global standards for future production.

"Our collaboration, which spans over 145 years, is a powerful reminder that Merck and Siemens are more than just partners - we are longstanding allies in shaping the future.”
