Hyundai Motor Company has appointed José Muñoz as the company’s President and CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2025.

José will lead the execution of the company’s customer-focused vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’, expanding its leadership position in next-generation mobility, including diversified powertrain offerings, electrification and hydrogen technology. Strengthening Hyundai’s global strategy is vital, to prepare for the tariffs and trading restrictions Donald Trump has promised to introduce in his second US presidential term.

Muñoz succeeds current President and CEO Jaehoon Chang, who has been promoted to the Vice Chair of Hyundai Motor Group- Automotive Division. He will also strive to advance the company’s global management system, elevating Hyundai Motor’s status as a global brand.

Muñoz first joined Hyundai Motor Company in 2019 as President and Global Chief Operating Officer and President and CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor North America. In 2022, he was appointed to the Hyundai Motor Company board of directors with expanded responsibilities which included Europe, India, Middle East and Africa, and Asia Pacific. 

In this role he also led global sales, service and product planning as part of the Global Operations Division. Muñoz achieved record sales and financial performance for the Hyundai and Genesis brands in the North American market. He did this through a profitability-focused sales structure, helping secure the group’s ranking in the top three global automotive companies by sales.

Muñoz succeeds current President and CEO Jaehoon Chang, who has been promoted to the Vice Chair of Hyundai Motor Group - Automotive Division. He will also work to advance the company’s global management system, elevating Hyundai Motor’s status as a global brand.

In his time at Hyundai, Muñoz has enhanced operational performance, improved the company’s competitiveness and strengthened dealership networks. As CEO of the group, US$12.6bn is  being invested to construct the new Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America production facility and two battery joint ventures in Georgia.
