Saab: Enhancing Radar and Underwater Robotics for UK Defence

Saab UK has unveiled a new, state-of-the-art campus in a move designed to boost the nation's defence sector.
The new site, which houses three advanced buildings, is dedicated to the development and manufacturing of Saab’s radar systems, in addition to its market-leading Seaeye underwater robotics.
It will play a critical role in bolstering the UK’s sovereign defence capabilities, serving both domestic and international customers as the company looks to future growth.
Investing in the UK's defence sector
The opening of Saab UK’s new campus marks the conclusion of a significant investment pledged by the company in 2023.
It reflects Saab’s confidence in the UK’s strategic position within the global defence market and its ongoing dedication to supporting the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the UK Armed Forces.
The new campus will create up to 400 highly-skilled manufacturing jobs, with many of these positions dedicated to advanced engineering and technology.
It will also create new opportunities for apprenticeships, providing another pathway for high-tech manufacturing careers.
In addition to its importance in terms of job creation, the campus is a crucial part of Saab’s ongoing efforts to enhance the UK’s sovereign defence capabilities.
The facility will be responsible for developing and producing cutting-edge systems such as the Giraffe 1X 3D multi-mission radar and the all-electric subsea remotely operated vehicle, Seaeye SR20.
As an island nation, building robust maritime defences and sensors remains critical to national security.
“This new campus is testament to Saab’s growth in the UK, reinforcing our long-term commitment to the UK’s defence," says Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab. "Thanks to our investment here we will deliver innovative technologies and products for our customers.
"We are pleased to have the Secretary of State for Business and Trade join us today to mark this important occasion and to underline the important relationship between Saab and the UK."
Strengthening radar and robotics technology
Saab’s new campus is set to have a significant impact on MOD operations.
The site will serve as a centre of excellence for radar and underwater robotics technologies, optimised to meet future radar requirements and servicing needs.
It will also provide essential support for the in-service radars currently used by the UK Armed Forces.
The advancement of the Giraffe 1X radar system, currently used by the UK Armed Forces, will be critical for the MOD.
The system plays a critical role in air defence and surveillance, and will need to keep up with the MOD's evolving needs and objectives.
Additionally, Saab will be providing ongoing servicing and support for a range of other radar systems currently in use by the UK military, including the Giraffe AMB air defence radars and the TAIPAN (Arthur) artillery locating radars.
The Seaeye underwater robotics systems produced at the campus, including the Seaeye SR20, are another key part of Saab’s portfolio.
These all-electric, subsea remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are used for a range of applications, from military operations to industrial and environmental monitoring.
With its advanced capabilities, the Seaeye SR20 line is expected to enhance the UK’s ability to conduct underwater operations, ensuring that the MOD has access to the latest technology for critical tasks.
Keeping the UK at the forefront of defence technology.
The opening of Saab UK’s new campus will help strengthen the UK's defence sector, enhancing its technological innovation.
With its focus on radar systems and underwater robotics, the facility will not only help meet current requirements but will also play a key role in supporting future defence initiatives.
The campus is designed with expansion in mind, ensuring that Saab can continue to grow its capabilities and serve an increasingly global customer base.
This investment in local manufacturing is essential for maintaining the UK's national security and ensuring that the MOD has access to the latest and most advanced systems available.
“Following the Government’s pledge to go further and faster to grow the economy, this is another vote of confidence in the UK, our world-class defence sector, and our upcoming Industrial Strategy," says Rt Hon Jonathan Reynolds MP, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade.
"Saab’s investment in Hampshire has brought a major boost to local communities with hundreds of new high-paid, high-skilled jobs, and is exactly the sort of growth our pro-business, pro-growth Industrial Strategy will support."
Rt Hon John Healey MP, Secretary of State for Defence, adds: "This major investment has demonstrated how defence is an engine for growth. Saab’s new facility strengthens support for the radars that help protect our Armed Forces, having created highly skilled jobs while driving innovation.
"With promising apprenticeship opportunities, this site is helping to drive the jobs of the future – ensuring the next generation has the expertise to keep Britain at the forefront of defence technology."
