Volvo & Dassault Systèmes: Simulating Our Automotive Future
Volvo Cars is spearheading its push towards an all-electric future by incorporating the advanced 3DEXPERIENCE platform by Dassault Systèmes into its engineering workflows.
This partnership is set to transform the way Volvo Cars designs and manufactures its next-generation electric vehicles.
The integration of this platform aims to streamline product development processes, slash operational costs and establish a cohesive system for designing state-of-the-art electric vehicles.
In harnessing the platform’s robust capabilities, Volvo Cars sets itself on track to achieve its vision of becoming a fully electric automotive manufacturer.
Driving Innovation with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform
Dassault Systèmes describes its 3DEXPERIENCE platform as a game-changing innovation for diverse industries, including manufacturing.
The platform is focused on digital twins, digital replicas of real-life processes and systems.
Digital twins enable companies to enhance their production cycles, manage product lifecycles more effectively and coordinate efforts across global teams.
This pioneering technology is particularly vital for the automotive sector, tackling frequent challenges related to electrification, vehicle connectivity and autonomous driving. It ensures improved product quality, enables extensive reuse of parts and simplifies intricate workflows.
To date, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform supports more than 350,000 customers globally in overcoming these challenges while cutting down on costs and shortening development periods.
Previously, Volvo Cars utilised various CATIA applications from Dassault Systèmes for design and engineering.
Their existing familiarity with Dassault’s systems will facilitate a seamless transition of data to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
This integration will consolidate disparate tools into a single, scalable system, empowering engineers to work more collaboratively and address issues including regulatory compliance, testing, validation and traceability.
“Automakers are under pressure to deliver new products and functions quickly and cost-effectively," says Laurence Montanari, Vice President of the Transportation and Mobility Industry at Dassault Systèmes.
"Volvo Cars excels in developing unique vehicle experiences. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform will provide the technology to build these best-in-class experiences by combining hardware and software development.”
Tools empowering Volvo’s electric vision
Volvo Cars’ engineering teams will engage with a suite of customised solutions from Dassault Systèmes based on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform:
- Efficient multi-energy platform: Enhances the development framework for varying energy systems.
- Global modular architecture: Ensures adaptability and optimises part reuse.
- Smart, safe & connected: Integrates advanced safety features and connectivity technologies.
- Sustainable multi-functional vehicle: Focuses on improving the environmental sustainability of vehicle designs.
These advanced solutions foster real-time collaboration among teams dispersed across different locations and improve operational efficiency throughout the vehicle development process.
Sustainability and leadership
Volvo Cars further highlights its commitment to environmental responsibility with the acknowledgment of its CEO, Jim Rowan, who has earned a place on TIME’s 2024 Climate Leaders List.
Jim is celebrated for his forward-thinking approach to sustainable business practices and active engagement with global climate issues.
“I’m honoured to be included on the TIME100 Climate Leaders List among individuals driving impactful change," he says.
"This recognition reflects the collective efforts of everyone at Volvo Cars. It takes thousands of dedicated people to drive our sustainability agenda forward and we are united by a common ambition: to reduce the use of fossil fuels and take the actions required to advance the climate agenda.
"We are at a pivotal moment in history and the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy has never been more urgent. Electrification offers a powerful opportunity to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and create more sustainable jobs.
"However, real progress needs collaboration and everyone can play their part. That includes businesses delivering on their sustainability ambitions, consumers choosing brands wisely, Governments prioritising clean energy through stable and supportive policies and the financial sector accelerating capital allocation toward sustainable growth."
Being included in the TIME100 Climate Leaders List underscores significant contributions towards combating climate change, reiterating Volvo’s firm commitment to sustainable practices, including achieving net-zero emissions.
By pairing the innovative capabilities of Dassault Systèmes’ simulation platform with Volvo Cars' commitment to sustainability, this collaboration marks a significant leap towards reshaping the future of automotive manufacturing and sustainable mobility.
