ZeroKey: Safe Space drives continuity, productivity & safety

By Georgia Wilson
ZeroKey’s Real Time Location System (RTLS) helps organisations improve business continuity and productivity both during and post-COVID
Unified by one mission, to drive optimisation through digital transformation, ZeroKey Inc. delivers on an agile and flexible Real-Time Location System (RTLS) platform that harnesses the power of ultrasonics to digitize the 3D location of assets, personnel, and equipment across large industrial environments, down to the millimetre The technology can completely digitize functions like manual assembly processes and workflows, enabling dramatic efficiency gains and fewer process failures for industrial and manufacturing customers.

ZeroKey’s Smart Space solution is best described as a wide-area acoustics-based indoor positioning system. Kind of like GPS, but it works indoors where GPS signals cannot reach. Smart Space provides building-wide millimetre-level 3D tracking of objects using a coin-sized IIoT sensor that communicates with other sensors and gateways placed throughout a space. It sounds complicated, but at its core, Smart Space is a real-time tracking system, and the position data it generates is used in a variety of applications such as machine automation and navigation, anomaly detection and inventory tracking.

The shift towards Industry 4.0 or Factory of the future has shown that digitization can make machines, workflows and even people more efficient and resilient. More recently, and due in part to some feedback from existing customers, ZeroKey realized their core technology could help with another issue facing people and businesses worldwide: COVID-19.

The future of industrial safety with spatial intelligence

While having a safe working environment has never been a low priority for organisations, the pandemic has certainly emphasized the importance of ensuring employee safety in the workplace. The level of location accuracy and precision achieved by Smart Space is currently utilized in industrial settings to create alert zones, or track location in man down scenarios. So it wasn’t a big stretch to re-tool the existing technology to tackle the COVID-related challenges affecting employee safety and business continuity.

Enter Safe Space, ZeroKey’s wearable physical distancing and contact tracing solution that alerts users when physical distance requirements are not being maintained AND collects encrypted contact tracing data to support a rapid and purposeful response in the event of a COVID-19 case.

Whether you’re looking to return safely to working operations, safeguarding for potential future events or looking for actionable and contextual insights in operating environments, Safe Space and Smart Space can help organisations reinforce physical distancing policies, as well as track thousands of objects simultaneously and in real-time.

So how does Safe Space work?

ZeroKey’s patented RTLS platform powers the Smart Space (indoor positioning) system, while Safe Space isolates the RTLS measurement core to perform proximity detection to generate the contact tracing data.

Already being deployed by industrial customers globally in Canada, US, Europe, UK and Japan, Safe Space passively measures and stores distance data between other Safe Space devices nearby. Should two devices breach the minimum distance threshold, the devices notify the user via an audible alert, haptic vibration and flashing light.

The solution provides surgical level accuracy and contact tracing capabilities, enabling a more targeted approach to managing potential outbreaks, avoiding facility or building wide shutdowns and major business disruptions while keeping employee safety top of mind..

ZeroKey’s Safe Space solution is 100 times more accurate than comparable devices that rely on Bluetooth and features other advancements like military-grade security. Plus, when the pandemic is finally over, customers can recoup costs by redeploying the devices as part of ZeroKey’s Smart Space solution to optimise workflows and operations, reduce waste, and drive digital transformation on the floor.

The benefits of Safe Space

ZeroKey believes that businesses can protect their people and their bottom-line at the same time.

Safe Space aims to simplify operational challenges by:

  • Harnessing innovative technology including, accurate proximity data using wide-area and millimetre-level 3D tracking, high-grade encryption, and an on-premises or in-cloud application server.
  • Generating automated reports to determine who has been in close proximity to a person infected with COVID-19
  • Eliminating reliance on error-prone human recollection
  • Minimising administrative overheads
