How Checkpoint's Mexico RFID Plant Boosts Manufacturing

Checkpoint Systems has opened its latest RFID manufacturing facility in Mexico City, expanding production capacity across North America.
Known for its radio-frequency identification (RFID) solutions, the company has added a 10,000-square-metre site to its network, aiming to improve delivery times, increase manufacturing capacity and streamline supply chains for customers in the region.
Improving proximity for quicker delivery
The new site, located in central Mexico, brings RFID production closer to Checkpoint Systemsâ North American customers.
This shift allows for faster shipping, reduced transport costs and better alignment with just-in-time manufacturing models.
RFID technology enables item-level tracking by using electromagnetic fields to transfer data from tags attached to products. These tags, often referred to as RFID inlays, are vital components in digital inventory systems, particularly in retail and industrial manufacturing.
Ben Lilienthal, President of Checkpoint Systems, explains the decision: "Our investment in this facility reflects our dedication to innovation, operational excellence and providing unmatched value to our customers.
"By establishing a presence in Mexico, we are reinforcing our ability to deliver cutting-edge RFID solutions faster and more efficiently than even before."
By positioning production nearer to key markets, the company also enhances supply chain agility for businesses depending on RFID technology for tracking and inventory management.
With RFID use expanding in manufacturing and logistics, the move supports growing demand while reducing dependency on more distant supply lines.
High-volume plant built for adaptability
The Mexico City factory is designed for both scale and flexibility. Producing blank, printed and encoded RFID inlays, the site can deliver up to 4.2 billion units per year.
These inlays are embedded with chips that transmit data, allowing goods to be tracked through each stage of the supply chain.
The manufacturing site includes systems for bonding, converting and personalising RFID inlays, making it suitable for both standardised, high-volume orders and tailored production runs.
Its operations include full printing and converting capabilities, meaning it can adapt RFID tags for a range of applications without relying on off-site processing.
Checkpoint Systemsâ new factory also adheres to recognised ethical and sustainability standards. It holds certifications from SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) and FSC CoC (Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody), which cover ethical labour practices and the traceability of paper-based materials used in labels.
Christian Haider, Director of Plant Operations, highlights the role of the new site: "This new facility is a testament to our commitment to advanced manufacturing and quality production.
"With state-of-the-art technology and a highly skilled workforce, we are well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for RFID inlays and deliver superior products to our customers."
The integration of printing, encoding and converting on-site makes the plant one of few globally capable of handling the full RFID label production process internally, allowing for quicker response to shifting order requirements.
Part of a larger manufacturing footprint
Checkpoint Systems is a business unit of CCL Industries, a global packaging and labelling group with more than 200 facilities worldwide. The new factory in Mexico City fits into this broader network, enhancing the company’s capacity to meet demand across global markets while reducing pressure on existing sites.
With an investment of $40m, the plant adds both production scale and local employment, creating 100 new jobs. Its strategic placement supports the North American supply chain while contributing to the region's economic development.
The site not only boosts the company's manufacturing volume but also reflects a wider commitment to localisation. By producing closer to its key customers, Checkpoint Systems aims to provide consistent quality and faster service as demand for RFID tracking grows.
The new facility strengthens the company’s position in the global RFID market, allowing it to serve more sectors while responding quickly to customer needs.
