Finland’s Biovian invests €50m to strengthen its biopharmaceutical manufacturing, in the latest move by the country to meet global manufacturing demands

Leading Finnish biopharmaceutical manufacturer Biovian has invested €50m to expand its manufacturing facility in Turku, Finland.

Manufactures biopharmaceuticals

Biovian was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Turku, Finland. The company manufactures biopharmaceuticals, from the first steps of development to the final product in a vial.

The new factory will include advanced technologies to support the development, manufacturing and testing of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products.

There will also be Class A to D cleanroom areas, used for bulk drug substances. Biovian will adhere to EU and US GMP requirements for safe, reliable and compliant biopharmaceutical products.

“The new manufacturing facility will not only strengthen Biovian’s position as a key player in the CDMO sector, but also contribute to the growth of the biopharmaceutical industry in Finland and most of all provide vital therapies to patients suffering from today’s untreatable diseases," said Antti Nieminen, CEO of Biovian.

The project will be completed by December 2024 and is scheduled to be fully operational by 2025, creating over 100 jobs for people in the region.

From biopharmaceuticals to semiconductors, Finland meets manufacturing demands

Finland is expanding its reach through manufacturing items rising in global demand. Earlier this year, Chinese semiconductor manufacturer National Silicon Industry Group agreed to invest €400mn/US$422mn with Finnish manufacturer Okmetic, to build a silicon wafer production facility in Finland. The investment is expected to create 500 jobs, although production will not begin till 2025.

In addition to this, the country is taking a sustainable approach to manufacturing, as the industry contributes almost a quarter of anthropogenic GHG emissions. Mika Tienhaara, former CEO of Rocsole, wants to change this with the help of automation.

“Many manufactured goods at a large scale are required for the electrification and energy transition, like smart chips. But we need to ensure that the manufacturing processes are improved, for instance, with the unique process insights that Rocsole can provide,” he said. “First of all, automation can reduce or entirely remove the need for people to move to and from sites, which is one part of reducing emissions. Automation can improve productivity, be more resource-efficient and reduce waste, leading to reduced emissions.”
