BMW & SAP's sustainable vehicle development
Automotive manufacturing is moving in a sustainable direction, with BMW & SAP using the latest digital manufacturing technologies to do this.
German vehicle manufacturer BMW is a pioneer in sustainable vehicle development, from the CEO’s office to the factory floor.
“Sustainability and economic success go hand in hand at the BMW Group,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management. “As a premium manufacturer, we have the ambition to lead the way in the area of sustainability.”
Meanwhile, software development company SAP is determined to create a sustainable future for all, with everyone playing a part. Enterprise resource planning software SAP S/4HANA is designed for big data.
Together, BMW’s iFACTORY in Oxford, UK, successfully went live with SAP S/4HANA – the first of BMWs connected factories to do so.
"The go-live at the Oxford plant is an important milestone in the digitalisation process of our production," says Michael Nikolaides, Head of Production Network, Logistics at the BMW Group. “It is further evidence of the transformation that is anchored in the BMW iFACTORY. It is the starting point of one of the largest change projects in the history of our production network. The new IT standards will be implemented successively at our BMW Group production sites.”
The BMW Group production value chain is driving digitalisation in its technology clusters:
- Smart Data Analytics
- Smart Logistics
- Innovative Automation & Assistance Systems
- Additive Manufacturing
SAP and BMW's sustainable automotive manufacturing collaboration
SAP and BMW have worked together for years and SAP is proud to shape the future of automotive manufacturing with its partner.
“BMW iFACTORY is BMW Group’s revolutionary strategy for the future of automotive production, where it will set new standards in climate protection and competitiveness using digital manufacturing technologies that are flexible, efficient and sustainable,” said Scott Russell, Executive Board Member, Customer Success at SAP. “BMW Group and SAP have created the first blueprint for the process digitisation of automotive plants. It will establish a new technology standard that could shape how the automotive industry produces vehicles. The jointly created solution unites and simplifies processes and IT system changes in the areas of parts logistics, finance/controlling and customs.”
