Larry Ellison, Co-Founder of Oracle, celebrates a legacy of innovation in technology and manufacturing
From college dropout to billionaire Co-Founder of Oracle, Larry Ellison's journey is a tale of relentless ambition, innovation and groundbreaking success

Larry Ellison, Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Oracle Corporation, is a towering figure in technology. As a pioneer in enterprise software and cloud computing, Larry has shaped the digital landscape, driving innovation and transformation across various sectors, including manufacturing.

Larry’s journey to becoming a tech mogul is as remarkable as it is unconventional. Born in the Bronx, he was raised in a modest, two-bedroom apartment on Chicago's South Side by his adoptive parents. And, from an early age, his life was full of challenges.

Known for his rebellious nature, Larry often clashed with his adoptive father, who doubted his potential. Despite a natural aptitude for maths and science, his academic career was tumultuous; he dropped out of both the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago. Yet, these setbacks didn't deter him.

With self-taught programming skills and a dream, Larry headed to California with little money but a lot of ambition. He worked various tech jobs before co-founding Software Development Labs in 1977, which later became Oracle Corporation.

Today, Oracle is a global leader in database software and cloud-engineered systems, boasting annual revenues exceeding US$40bn and serving more than 430,000 customers across 175 countries.

Oracle offers a comprehensive suite of cloud applications, platform services and engineered systems. Its flagship products, such as Oracle Database, Oracle Cloud and Oracle Fusion Applications, are integral to businesses worldwide.

The organisation’s origins can be traced back to a project Larry worked on for the CIA, which inspired the creation of a commercial database program. His career is a testament to the power of grit, vision and transforming life's challenges into opportunities for success.

Larry's influence extends beyond Oracle. He served on the board of Tesla and was previously a Director at Apple. He’s also been involved in the America's Cup yacht racing competition, founding Oracle Team USA. From 1977 to 2014, Ellison served as Oracle’s CEO, driving the company to its current status as a tech powerhouse.

Oracle’s impact on manufacturing is profound, offering cloud-based solutions that optimise operations. Oracle Manufacturing Cloud helps streamline production, enhance quality control and improve supply chain visibility. Its IoT applications allow manufacturers to collect and analyse real-time data, while Adaptive Intelligent Applications use machine learning to predict and prevent equipment failures, reducing downtime.

Oracle’s solutions are adopted by manufacturers worldwide, driving successful digital transformation strategies. During the COVID-19 outbreak, Oracle's cloud infrastructure supported increased demand for remote work and digital services in the manufacturing sector.

Under Larry’s leadership, Oracle has positioned itself as a key player in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, helping manufacturers leverage AI, IoT and cloud computing to create smart factories and resilient supply chains.

Ellison’s visionary leadership is evident in his relentless pursuit of innovation. He previously stated: “We’re building a cloud that can be deployed anywhere, from the largest data centres to the smallest factories, allowing manufacturers to scale operations efficiently and effectively.”

His passion for success is palpable: “I’m addicted to winning. The more you win, the more you want to win.”

Oracle's commitment to excellence hasn't gone unnoticed. In 2020, Gartner named Oracle a Leader in the Magic Quadrant for Manufacturing Execution Systems and, in 2021, it was crowned ‘Cloud ERP Vendor of the Year’ at the Manufacturing Technology Awards. Larry himself was inducted into the Manufacturing Leadership Council's Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to digitally transforming the sector.

Now, Larry receives another accolade as Manufacturing Digital celebrates his Lifetime of Achievement – a fitting tribute to a career defined by relentless innovation and a passion for transforming industries.
